Set in the summer of 1776, 1776 follows the debates and struggles of the Continental Congress as the American colonies consider declaring independence from Great Britain. The story centers on the passionate but often frustrating efforts of John Adams, who pushes his fellow delegates to vote for independence despite strong opposition and political division.
Adams works alongside Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson to persuade the colonies that freedom is worth the risk of war. As tensions rise, delegates wrestle with personal convictions, political pressures, and the moral contradictions of liberty—particularly the issue of slavery. Through spirited debate, humor, and powerful music, the Congress ultimately reaches a historic decision: to sign the Declaration of Independence and give birth to a new nation.
1776 blends history, drama, and wit to explore the courage, compromise, and humanity behind one of America’s most pivotal moments.
